Goddards Brewery have launched Starboard!, an easy drinking 4% golden session ale . It’s a brand new recipe combining English hops with pale ale and cara malt, to deliver a distinctive orangey flavour with a citrus taste, with a wonderful hoppy aroma and finish.
Xavier Baker managing director of Goddards commented, “Balance is the key with a beer like Starboard! We had a good idea of the overall taste and what we wanted to achieve with the new recipe; aroma, body, mouthfeel, colour, strength. Within the different styles of ales, the 4% golden ale (known as a session beer) category is the biggest volume. We wanted to create a brand new exciting recipe to add to our classic range of ales. Using experience we can bring all of these together harmoniously.”
Sailors can be heard shouting “Starboard!” as a warning when maneuvering at sea in close quarters with another boat. The established ‘right of way’ when under sail is given to boats on a starboard tack. The pump clip also features a starboard marker buoy which is distinguished by its flashing green light so people will see this beer coming
As well as producing a Starboard! Goddards have announced that they will be using Isle of Wight grain in all their ale production for the next year. The quality of the grain has to be of the highest standard in order to create award-winning real ale and the 2016 crop has been tested and shown to be of the correct calibre and perfect for brewing.
Isle of Wight Grain is responsible for delivering the 60 tonnes of barley required by Goddards to sustain a full year of production, Pete Thomas commented: “The grain comes from a range of Isle of Wight Farms and goes off around the UK and Europe with some heading to big-name breweries in Germany and Amsterdam. By focusing on the quality, we are pleased that this year there is enough grain coming home to allow Goddards a full year’s brew. It is a real achievement.”
Starboard! will be available across the Isle of Wight from March.
