With it set to be a scorcher over the weekend (and let’s face it, we’ve got nothing better to do) it’s time to fire up the barbecue and get yourselves in the mood for some al-fresco dining. We’ve put together another handy guide for you to make your barbecue the best it can be – from the best places to source the food and also just as importantly… The drink. Happy barbecuing people!


Where to get your bangers and more!

Isle of Wight Meat Co. has got you covered with their new barbecue packs which include a dozen sausages, 10 beef burgers, as well as a choice four items off this huge list of the following: lamb koftas, beef teriyaki skewers, meaty barbecue pork ribs, minted lamb chops, pork and apple burgers, lamb kebabs, harissa and honey cocktail sausage, peppered pork kebabs, lamb tikka kebabs, hot chilli dogs and mojito cocktail sausages. As you can imagine enough to keep you going! They have a great online shop making it really easy to navigate, as well as offering Island-wide delivery of their products.

Farmer Jacks Farm Shop’s dedicated butchers counter and head butcher Paul is there to help. The benefit of visiting the shop is being able to take advantage of his forty years of experience and the wide range of cuts and barbecue friendly products available. With a nickname like ‘Sausage’, you can imagine his own recipe sausages are famous Island-wide. Of course, strict social distancing is in place, but if you have any queries call ahead.

Brownrigg’s Farm Shop offers fresh locally grown fruit and vegetables as well as their own meat on their in-store butchers counter. Visit the butcher Thursday to Saturday for special requests and for cooking advice – why not see what he advises you put on the barbecue for something new to try. Deliveries are available on a Tuesday and Thursday. There is a £3 delivery charge or free delivery when you spend £15 or more. To observe social distancing there is a limit to five customers in the store at one time, for everyone’s health and safety.

Briddlesford Lodge Farm’s butcher’s counter is stocked with a full range of specialist Isle of Wight meats including Briddlesford veal, award-winning sausages, as well as local favourites Cheverton Farm (Isle of Wight Meat Co) beef and lamb, Idlecombe Farm lamb and Brownrigg poultry. They are offering home delivery Monday to Friday but contact them for details.

Have youtried the Farmer Jack’s honey roast sausage yet? Made fresh there every week.

The Butcher’s Shop in Cowes is a local, independent, family butcher’s service providing high-quality meats and other related Island-based products. If you are heading to the shop, to reduce contact further their butchers will place your goods on a table for you to collect. They are offering a free delivery service to Cowes and the surrounding areas, or if you’re further afield, there is a £5 charge. They are always doing special offers so be sure to ask them what they’ve got for you in terms of stuff for the barbecue also keep your eyes peeled on their Facebook page for details.

Island Foods is a traditional family butcher stocking Isle of Wight meats that can be delivered directly to your door. They offer free home delivery on orders over £15. The shop is not open at the moment but you can order online, by phone or email.

D W Jarvis Family Butchers of Ryde offers delivery for free with no minimum order. Ideal for those that have to stay in or may need to arrange supplies for loved ones. Individual arrangements are no problem. Purveyors of quality naturally fed meat, Pure Scotch Aberdeen Angus and North Devon beef, local and Dorset lambs to name just a few. They have a full range of homemade sausages all in natural skins and in many different flavours.

W.W.Woodfords strive to provide their customers with the best quality meats on the Isle of Wight. In Ventnor Five a Day greengrocers and Ventnor Butchers have teamed up, so why not get your salad and veg to grill as well as you barbecue meats delivered to your door and tick off two jobs at once? Norris Family Grocers has an extensive range of chilled and frozen products, groceries, off license, in-store bakery, fresh fruit and veg and many more local products – so you can get your baps, beers and burgers all in one go! PJ Thorne Butchers is another of the Island’s great traditional family-run butchers selling only the best quality meats and poultry from around the UK. We live on an Island so invite some fish to the party


Captain Stan’s Bembridge Fish in the heart of Bembridge Village, are still bringing you fresh fish and shellfish mostly caught by their own boat moored in Bembridge Harbour. Their shop is still open but operating with strict social distancing measures. They are open 9am–3pm Monday to Thursday and 9am–4.30pm Friday and Saturday. Tel: 01983 875 572

Ventnor Haven Fishery’s shop is open every day from 11am–4pm Monday to Saturday and 11am–3pm on Sundays. They are still out daily for their catch of fantastic Ventnor Bay seafood and you can get your hands on an amazing range including fresh crab and lobster meat, crab cakes, fishcakes, crab turnovers, whole cooked crabs and lobsters and more, alongside their daily changing fresh fish counter. So rest assured you can still get amazing fresh local fish. Call ahead to reduce contact. They are also offering a limited service reserved purely for those who can not leave the house. J&B Fisheries have a vast selection of locally caught fresh fish on a daily basis alongside locally caught crab, lobster and prawns from the J&B boat that is moored down at Yarmouth harbour. They also have a large selection of smoked fish, paté and gravadlax all prepared, cooked and smoked on the premises. The shop is still open from 8am–12.30pm with social distancing in place, but for those self-isolating there is a delivery service available, just give them a call at the shop. Tel: 01983 752269. 

Stock your home bar

Adgestone Vineyard are a producer and supplier of low sulphite vegan wines, all grown and pressed on-site. Do not fear, the Isle of Wight Distillery are still doing online orders so there will be no real disruption to you getting your Mermaid Gin and their other Island spirits! Their deliveries happen on weekdays to the whole Island. Get your order in before 9.30am for same-day delivery. Minimum order is one bottle.

Rosemary Vineyard – whilst the vineyard itself is closed due to government guidelines, don’t worry they have got you covered via their website, with their own Rosemary Vineyard products, as well as Isle of Wight Distillery and Goddards Brewery items available online. Goddards Brewery are taking online orders through their website where you can shop their range of local Isle of Wight ales from the oldest brewery on the Island.  They are offering weekday deliveries Island-wide. The Island really does have everything! Including our very own Isle of Wight charcoal from Isle of Wight Woodland Projects who offer everything from different types of charcoal, wooden products and forest management services. Their barbecue charcoal is available online from their website with delivery and at most local village stores, as well as a lot of the farm shops and independent shops.

Lastly on a serious note please be aware that you need to take extra care when barbecuing as our public services are stretched enough without you burning down your back garden or burning yourself. So take care, drink responsibly and maybe assign a designated barbecue-er so someone can supervise.
