The Isle of Wight is home to some of the most magical, stunning sunsets you will ever see. When you add in a few drinks and some good company, you have all the makings of a top evening.
Thanks to our miles of coastline, there are several places on the Island to catch a good view as the sun goes down. Here is our guide to the places that just pip the post to spend a simply beautiful evening…
West is best, at least that is what they say when it comes to chasing sunsets. Take your pick from several places that offer a great vantage point as well as good food and drink. The Hut is renowned for its views. The sun sets right across the sea at Colwell Bay creating photo-worthy sunset shots, with views across to Hurst Castle. Sit outside or on warmer evenings, the sun-deck, where the roof opens automatically.
If it’s too busy there, the neighbouring Longbeach Bar is always quieter but actually has a slightly better view across The Solent for a few seconds longer – thanks to sitting higher up Colwell Chine.
The Cow at Tapnell Farm run sunset parties throughout the summer months. Every Thursday, head along to one of the Summer Shindigs which feature live music and entertainment each week. The outdoor BBQ will be serving up tasty flame-grilled food or book a table in the restaurant.
On the north side of the Island, sunset searchers will be treated to spectacular skies across the New Forest towards Fawley Power Station, which actually makes for a pretty dramatic backdrop. Local pub, The Woodvale, has made the most of its vantage point with large windows and a raised outdoor seating area.
Heading up high is always a good plan when chasing the sky. The Culver Haven Inn sits on its own, right up the top of Culver Down in Sandown. Choose the window with a view, or after dinner, sit in your car in the car park and watch the sun twinkle on the sea across towards Shanklin.
If you are visiting the south of the Island, take a trip to Ventnor and The Royal Hotel. Book The Riviera Terrace, one of the finest alfresco eating spots on the Island. You can order an Isle of Wight picnic from the chefs, or enjoy pre-dinner drinks before heading over to the restaurant.
